September 8, 2010

Azipod propelled vessels with toe angle optimization can reduce fuel consumption

Eniram Oy, a provider of advanced decision support systems to the owners and operators of large commercial vessels announced entering into a research and development study with ABB, the leading power and automation technology group.

In the study, the parties will evaluate, develop, test and eventually produce as OEM, intelligent systems based on the Eniram VMS (Vessel Management System) to optimize the relation of Azipod steering angle(s) on vessels operating with Azipod propulsion system.
It is estimated that the fuel consumption of the vessel can be reduced by up to 2% by optimizing Azipod toe angles. The savings will be tested together by both parties.

"Combining ABB's know-how in podded propulsion and Eniram's experience in high accuracy analytics systems will help our customers operate more efficiently and environmentally. This gives us one tool more to reach our target of providing best available performance in all fields of vessel operation" said Philip Padfield, CEO, Eniram Group.
