Some time ago I read an article on the internet based on an angry letter sent to a reader’s forum. The author was heavily complaining that his friends had been left ashore with their car, as the ferry had departed ten minutes ahead of schedule. When demanding for an explanation, they were told that it is the ferry operator’s policy to try departing ahead of schedule in order to save fuel. This tends to make perfect sense to everyone, because saving fuel means saving environment and that’s a good thing, right? Apparently not everyone agrees, as based on the comments following the letter, opinions were rather divided.

I attended the Hull Performance and Management Seminar, hosted by the Lloyds Maritime Academy in mid-June in London. It was a very interesting event, providing a good overview of the industry’s topical challenges – especially for someone like me who has never sailed (apart from as a passenger), and barely even seen a ship hull in close distance.
